The "Feinmechanische Anstalt Nürnberg-Wöhrd" produced patented artificial limbs such as legs, arms and hands. The engineers were confronted with the challenge of manufacturing the individual parts in series, so that these could then be tailored to the individual bodies using a modular construction.
The objective was functionality that was as realistic as possible. M.A.N. artificial legs, for instance, weighed less than three kilograms, had an adjustable lower leg oscillation and a sprung ankle, which distributed the bodyweight to five points within the foot and adjusted itself to uneven terrain.
